Our Shorts Program Embraces Entire LGBT Community

Comedies, Dramas & Surprises On The Screen

Once again this year, the Pittsburgh International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival is screening a collection of short movies that embrace everyone in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The screening occurs Wednesday, October 19, 7:30 p.m. at the SouthSide Works Cinema.

Called "Our Shorts" these films include:

"52" (Canada; 2010; 4 Minutes). Actor and comedian Scott Thompson --- best known for the comedy troupe and television series "The Kids in the Hall" --- delivers an amazing performance in this short about one gay man's ultimate nightmare: aging.

"Cold Star" (Germany; 2011; 7 Minutes). An inspiring piece of world, this film is about a boy pushed up a diving platform by a menacing crowd who gets help from a mysterious man.

"Don't Bring Scott" (USA; 2011; 28 Minutes) When David's working class parents celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary without inviting his partner, this All-American, rural family of three generations is dragged into the 21st century.

"In The Beginning" (Belgium; 2011; 6 Minutes). This delightful animated short is the tale of two sperms with the job of fertilizing an egg to create a baby --- even though both sperm are gay!

"Johnny & Lyman: A Life Together" (USA; 2010; 19 Minutes). This mini documentary profiles the extraordinary relationship of two men who have never parted since they met on VJ Day and who have lived together through tremendous social change.

"Perception" (USA; 2010; 2 Minutes). This very short and very fascinating film uses animation as an introspective poem to explore how a person's perception of self can differ from that of everyone else.

"T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness" (USA; 2010; 29 Minutes). Narrated by author Jewelle Gomez, this film exposes the triply oppressed (black, female, queer) pioneers of blues through interviews with cultural historians, vintage photos, footage and recordings. With lavish costumes and sexually suggestive lyrics, bisexual and lesbian singers such as Ma Rainey (got arrested for indecency at an all-girl party-while married to a man) and Gladys Bentley (a "bulldagger" in full tuxedo) were regularly shunned by the church and society for their rough and tumble ways.

"When Wil Becomes Wilma" (USA; 2011; 10 Minutes) This locally made documentary explores self discovery and challenging pre-conceived notions through the eyes of Pittsburgh resident and drag performer Wil as he transforms himself into Wilma.

Robert Philipson, the director of "T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness," is scheduled to appear at tonight's program to answer audience questions.

The Pittsburgh Lesbian & Gay Film Society is an all-volunteer organization with an active board of directors and a few small but active committees. Our mission is to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender culture and foster appreciation and visibility through film media. Founded in 1985, the Film Society produces one of the world's oldest LGBT film festivals every October. For more information, visit www.plgfs.org
