In the national fight for sexual equality, film has played an intricate role in bringing LGBT rights to the forefront. The Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival – in cooperation with ReelQ – is proud to represent the LGBT community in this year’s line-up, and is eager to break Pittsburgh soil with the premiere of a Venezuelan feature that shares the universality of film and sexuality.
Have you ever had a Bad Hair Day?
For nine-year-old Junior, every day is a Bad Hair Day. Writer/director Mariana Rondón chronicles Junior’s life in a housing project in contemporary Caracas, Venezuela, where he lives with his widowed mother and baby brother. While his mother struggles to find cleaning jobs to feed her family, Junior’s obsessions are of a more aesthetic nature. Above all, he longs for straight hair. His own, curly African hair is considered “Bad Hair.” His mother fears her son is gay, but his African grandmother is fond of the boy, and teaches him to dance to one of her favorite rock ‘n’ roll tunes. Rondón grounds the film in the harsh realities of working-class Caracas – with its underpinnings of racism, violence, poverty, and homophobia – and the enduring human search for beauty.
